Critical Thinking-Family and Education

Sociology emphasizes the importance of social institutions like the family and education.  Our family impacts all aspects of our social location, socialization and experiences in society.  Our access to education is largely determined by where we live and our family’s resources-economic capital (money), social capital ( social networks) and cultural capital (knowledge).  Our families and our education are connected to life chances.  For this assignment, connect the neighborhood you grew up in, the school(s) you attended and your family’s social location.  Some questions to consider:

Describe the school you attended –public, private, religious/ was it in your neighborhood or did you travel/ did you have to test in?

Describe the neighborhood you lived in–what was socioeconomic status, what was racial.ethnic/religious makeup

Describe your family’s experiences with education-parents/grandparents education, views on education, other resources

Write a one page response considering all these questions, and connecting it to some of the issues addressed in the lectures and readings on both Family and Education.
