Class, as we come to a close and note the current state of the world, we are in I want to provide options for you and utilize your learning.  I’m so incredibly proud of you all for getting to this point in the quarter.  You have your choice for ONE question.

Step-2. work for another student

1)  What else do you need to learn before you are ready to work in the system?

I need to learn how to be more empathetic. A couple of quarters ago, one of my classes talked about the different things that one can do empathize with some elses feelings. I am not a mean person, but I have my own problems to worry about. So, when one of my family members call me with their problems, I really do not want to listen to them. I am not the type of person that likes to hear people talk down on others. And the calls that I receive from family is mostly about other peoples personal business. Maybe this is why I feel this way. I do not always want to be their problem solver. Hearing these different stories every day from a person that is miserable, is irritating to me. I know that it is mainly my fault though. I guess I am a strong person, so I expect everyone else to be as strong as me.

Knowing that at some point in my life, I will run across a client that will have issues that they cannot handle on their own. I know that some of them will not be able to focus on their own, so here I go listening to someone elses problems. I need to understand that everyone is different. I need to understand that being empathetic is not a problem. I want to be able to address any situation that comes my way. My thought is to start listening to what other people have to say. And be more compassionate towards helping others.

 I do not want to be a person that is only at my job to make money. I want to help. I want to solve other peoples problems. It starts with me. In my position at the college, I work at, I come in contact with staff and students. This will be the place that I learn to be more empathetic. In any career, in any position that you choose, in my opinion, should put their expertise to good use. This helps you to carry out your duties in a more effective and efficient manner. I will say that I differentiate between efficient and effective, yet both are required for me to be successful.
