1. Make sure you set the context for your paper. What will you need to establish? Usually you do this right up front at the start of the paper.
2. Write a strong thesis that argues a position, that tells us why that position is important, and that tells us who your audience is.
3. Given that thesis, break it down into elements you will need to address or prove.
4. Then decide the order of those elements.
5. Make sure that each element is in a separate paragraph. Anchor each paragraph in a mini-thesis that argues a point (vs. describes something). Include your mini-theses for your paragraphs.
6. For each para, cite passages from the text, and include the page number
7. For each para, ask yourself if you need to pull from outside research. If so, add your research and briefly describe why that research in that para.
8. Keep moving through steps 5-7, returning to the thesis in step 3, when/if necessary.
9. As you work on your outline, you might decide you need to add another para, or add information. Thats absolutely fine.
10. What will you say in your conclusion? Do NOT simply repeat what youve said and rephrase your thesis. Maybe write a call to action? Or maybe link the issues youve discussed to a larger issue?
