Comparative essay
Comparative Analysis – Compare/Contrast Essay (25%)
Description
You will compose a critical comparative analysis of two short stories (fiction or non-fiction).
Specification
Your comparative analysis must be 1250-1500 words with 2 -5 external sources
Process
Choose two short works (Fiction/Non-Fiction) from any source. You may choose 1 that we have covered in the course (but not one you have already critiqued or used for your facilitation), but the other one is up to you. The sources must be accessible in print or from an ebook. These works do not have to have similarities, but it is recommended that you bear this in mind because the assignment is to relate the stories to each other.
When choosing your stories, consider:
- Sources from the same author (This may present challenges in terms of having enough material to compare and contrast; because all three stories were written by the same person, you will not have the opportunity to present three separate biographical backgrounds.)
- Themes
- Genres
- Language
- Two completely random stories.
This is just another type of critique; the only difference is that you will not be providing individual critiques on each of the stories. You will need to choose topics for which you would like to discuss how each story relates to those specific points. For example, you can consider:
- How do the works compare in terms of subject, purpose, context, style, time period, etc. and how do they differ?
You can provide a VERY short summary for each story; however, I advise that you provide the summary as background in the introduction then expand when you are discussing your points. You should not critique each story individually but rather focus on critiquing points that you can compare and contrast.
Remember to use APA documentation and provide an alphabetically organized and properly formatted ‘Reference’ page.
Include 2-5 external sources.
Provide a word count on your title page. You must remain within the word count range.
If you use more than one story that has been covered in the course material, you will receive a relative deduction.
- Think about any authors or genres that we have covered or that you are aware of that you find interesting.
- To choose your two stories, think of elements that are similar or completely different. Either will help you come up with clear ideas to discuss.
- Pick one to two of the elements of fiction; setting, plot, theme/symbols, style, characters, and point of view.
- Your outline should roughly follow the structure below. Make sure you are prepared to use specific examples from the works (with citations).
Consider the following formula.
Section 1: Intro
Paragraph 1
o Introduce each of two stories
o Give any necessary background
- Thesis and outline

- Provide example/evidence of this from the first story
Para 2

- Why is it important to story 2?
- Provide examples/ evidence
Para 3
o Use the point to compare and/ or contrast story A with story B?
Depending on how much you write, you could merge paragraph 1 and 2, or 2 and 3. No paragraph should be shorter than 3 sentences
Section 3: Point #2 o

- State why discussing the topic/ why it is important to story 1
