Windshield Strategy: A Community Assessment
In this real-world experience, you will focus on the systematic gathering of data using the traditional windshield survey technique to better understand a community and inform an overall community assessment.
You will also focus on developing a beginning understanding of the impact of poverty and health disparities on the health of a community its members.
You will record notes and observations while you complete the experience.
You will choose a community or zip code area near where you live or attend school, and conduct a windshield (or walking) survey in that location.
You will drive or walk through the community, taking systematic notes about what you observe regarding the physical, social and natural environment of the community.
Details about this Assignment
Your client is the community (population).
Assessing the communitys (clients) health status allows you to understand the community and define your client (community).
The assessment begins by clearly defining your client in terms of place, people and function.
You must use a logical and systematic approach to assess your client (community).
The principles learned as you complete the Community Assessment process increase your abilities to assess and evaluate any type of community client.
The assessment process helps plan programs and develop funding resources for program implementation in any type of community setting.
You should drive, walk, or take public transportation to move about in your community (zip code area) to make systematic observations that will help you understand more about the characteristics and health status of the community. (You can also use Google Earth to survey your area).
You will be using zip codes, to identify a geographic location to define your community.
Faculty approval of the specific zip code is required. ( Use the Community Assessment Zip Code Approval)
Knowledge of the diversity of the community or areas of need in the community will assist you with choosing a community. It is unwise to select and predominantly industrial or university residential area.
These types of communities will often hinder students from completing their intervention in the last stage of the project.
Websites, which can assist you with obtaining information about the communities are typically community, county, and state data, and from the zip codes.
After you conduct the survey, create a 2-page paper (approximately 500 words) that identifies and discusses 3 neighborhood strengths and 3 neighborhood risks. ( Submit with the Practicum log Journal)
Use the information gathered during your tour of the selected community and include each strength and risk rationale that integrates leading content for this assignment. ( Use the Windsheild Survey Data Form)

Items to include in your 2 page (500 word) that discusses 3 neighborhood strengths and 3 neighborhood weaknesses.
During the tour, you should look for and consider the following:
- Who are the people in this community? In other words, who do you see? Consider age, ethnicity, and family types.
- How do people travel and get around in this community? Do they use a car, train/bus (public transportation), bike, or walk? Are there safe biking/walking paths?
- What sorts of businesses and places of employment are in this community? What sorts of jobs are available?
- Where do people get their groceries? What types of restaurants are available? Where do people shop? Chain stores? Locally owned stores?
- What types of organizations provide services for children and families (e.g., schools, churches/places of worship, youth centers, day cares, HeadStart programs, libraries, places of higher education)?
- What types of housing is available in this community? Describe the housing conditions.
- What healthcare services and resources are available in this community? Full service clinics? Retail clinics? Specialty clinics? Hospitals? Dental services? CAM (complementary alternative medicine)/CAT (complementary alternative therapy)?
- Look for the recreation and exercise opportunities in this community? Are there parks/green space/playgrounds? To what extent are these areas maintained?
- As you traverse through this community, consider the communitys assets and factors that impact the overall health of this community and its members. What characteristic(s) are the most influential to the PHN who works within this community?
Windshield survey data commonly include observations such as the age and condition of the homes in the area; the amount of activity on the streets; the noise level in various areas of the community; the amount of traffic and/or public transportation; the location, type and condition of public buildings and businesses (e.g.how many government buildings, clinics, hospitals, churches, convenience stores, etc.)
