Guide to Paragraphs

Writing body paragraphs is something that can feel intimidating, but there’s a way to make sure you’re on track.  Look at the following guide.  Each number corresponds with the sentences in the body paragraph.

Sentence 1:  The topic sentence gives the who, what, and why (or how) for the paragraph.

Sentence 2:  The next sentence sets up the first example that will support the topic sentence.

Sentence 3:  Insert the quote or paraphrase being used as the first example and cite it in MLA style.

Sentences 4-8:  Analyze the evidence.  Explain how it supports the argument.  This should be at least three sentences.  In English 101, aim for four sentences.

Sentence 9:   Set up the next example that will support the topic sentence.

Sentence 10:  Insert the quote or paraphrase being used as the next example and cite it in MLA style.

Sentences 11-14:  Analyze the evidence.  Explain how it supports the argument.  This should be at least three sentences. 

Sentences 15:  Transition to the next paragraph.

Sometimes, you will set up the evidence by simply saying something like “According to…” rather than a whole separate sentence.  Some analysis will be longer or shorter than others.  If you have a 3rd example, it would go in at sentence 14.  There are, of course, small changes that will occur, but you can use this guide as a way to make sure you’re hitting all the important steps.
