Fiore spends a great deal of time in our textbook discussing communication. How do you interpret the chapter entitled "Saying What You Mean: Meaning What You Say"? How have you seen the content of that chapter play out in your education setting? What is one positive example and one not-so-positive example?
ANSWER THE ABOVE DISCUSSION AND THEN REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE’S POST. EXPLAINING WHY YOU AGREE WITH HIS POST TO THE ABOVE DISCUSSION (A MINIMUM OF 200 WORDS EACH)
CLASSMATE’S POST
Fiore's chapter on communication is about how principles, administrators, and teachers interpret saying what you mean and meaning what you say. This chapter discusses the opportunity to engage in a face-to-face conversation with school stakeholders. Clear speech in all aspects and practicing gives principles a natural speech pattern. I work with a non-profit and we have Freedom Writers Institutes where we focus on the educator. At times the teachers from their district will find themselves participating in The Freedom Writers teacher trainings with the principle of Moreno Valley High a local high school in Los Angeles.
At the Freedom Writers non-profit an event is held with loud music. Music is played and alcoholic drinks are handed out. The music is loud and sometimes you find yourself yelling in a seated area or on the dance floor. In this chapter Fiore discusses communication and how it takes special skills, a careful tone, and how to tackle nervousness. Anxious, or apprehensive during conversations, this uneasiness should be absent from the principal’s voice, if possible. Not showing uneasy feelings can be accomplished in three ways. Closing the gap or distance between people, maintaining eye contact, and lower his or her tone once close enough to hold a conversation. (Fiore, 171).
A not so positive and a positive example is that this principle is gay, and people can be discriminatory against the LGBTQ community. The important things for Freedom Writers to do in these events is to mingle and continue to work through the nervousness. The contract for the non-profit is strict when it comes to sexual harassment. The organization spends a whole day signing contracts and explaining what sexual harassment means. The Freedom Writers Institutes are held in convention at a local hotel and the non-profit that is a house. The Freedom Writers understand that mingling is important but sexual misconduct is more important when alcohol is involved and a person’s guard it let down after all it is still work even though there are parties. A Freedom Writer can be fired, but if communicating, dancing, and if The Freedom Writers are on their best behavior, they are invited back to attend future teacher training institutes.
