Paper 1 Assignment: Descriptive Narrative
Paper 1 Assignment: Descriptive Narrative
Below are the guidelines for the assignment. The next link will show you how to successfully meet these guidelines.
As you know, Paper 1 is about one of these topics:
Think of the most important object you own. Tell the story of how you acquired it and (eventually) describe it and what it means to you.
What is the significance of one of your tattoos (if you have one)? Tell the story of how you decided to get it and (eventually) describe it and what it means to you.
Other than your home or the home of a relative, what is the most important place in the world to you? Tell the story of the first time you went there and (eventually) describe it and what it means to you.
The rough draft and the final draft will both meet these guidelines to the best of your abilities. All criteria for the paper rest on the concepts discussed in the assigned chapters and lectures.
Structure:
The paper will have a strong title.
The paper will have an introduction that contains
A clear, sophisticated hook.
A clear overview of the topic of the paper.
A strong thesis statement.
The paper will have body paragraphs that each discuss one part of the story. Each will have
A clear topic sentence.
Lots of details and examples.
A clear concluding sentence.
The paper will have a conclusion that reinforces the deeper point of the paper without just repeating the thesis or the topics of each paragraph.
Development:
Each body paragraph will lead readers through the story clearly.
Each body paragraph will make use of description, including
Sensory details
Figurative language
Crisp diction/word choice
A clear dominant impression
Action-oriented verbs
Language:
The style will be clear and direct (no wordiness or extra “fluff”).
The sentences will vary in length.
The paper will have a minimum of grammar errors.
MLA Formatting:
The paper will be formatted in MLA, including
One-inch margins
Double-spacing (with no extra spaces between paragraphs; set Before and After to zero).
12-point Times New Roman font
A heading with your name, the instructor’s name, the course, and the date, in day-month-year format (i.e., January 4, 2023 would be written 4 January 2023).
A header ½ inch from the top of the page with your last name and the page number.
A centered title.
Paragraphs that are indented one tab (or ten spaces).
Justify the paper left only—not both sides.
Other Details:
Paper 1 will be a minimum of four pages in length; this means a full four pages (and not three pages and some writing on page 4).
Paper 1 is worth 105 points
15 of those points are from the rough draft
90 of those points are from the final draft
The rough draft will be graded based on length and effort. If it is shorter than the minimum, it will lose points accordingly. Though your instructor will comment briefly on the draft, you are strongly encouraged to use the tutoring resources available to you to help you revise your rough draft.
The final draft will be graded based on this rubric
