LIT 1000
8461DIRECTIONS
It would be foolish to think the only thing that reading classic short stories, plays, and poems can offer us is a grade in an English class.
Think about how often stories are used in our lives. Politicians use them to set up and prove their policies. Salesmen use them to convince us that a product is perfect for us. Parents use them to teach valuable lessons to their children. Ben Roethlisberger has a poem that his college coach used read to the team pasted in his locker at Heinz Field. Here it is:
Don’t Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must; but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow;
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit;
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

This poem brings real energy to Big Ben and he often reads it to his teammates. Poems can create Super Bowl Championships!!!
I had a former student who worked with disadvantaged delinquent teenagers. This LIT 1000 class gave him a bunch of stories to use to try and convince them that a better path is available to them.
Think about your future career and/or life. For your FINAL EXAMINATION, write a page and half story, play, or poem that is original. Now, you can certainly be inspired by what you’ve read, but take a stab at creating something new and original that might help you in your career and/or life. (P.S. If you enjoy this assignment, you could always look into a lit or creative writing class as an elective…)
Here’s the breakdown for the assignment:
MLA: Who cares! :)) No rules! Have a stylized title without a colon! Use a funky font! Double space? Single? It’s up to you! Go crazy!
G&P: Who cares! But, if you do use a run-on, fragment, or otherwise…You should know you’re breaking a rule. It should serve a purpose. A friend of mine writes fiction with a lot of ellipses. He feels they have an effect of standing in for interval thoughts as we speak…
CONTENT: Write at least a page and a half!!! No rules. It can be a play, poem, or story. You can single space or double space. You can break paragraphs when you want!!! Have fun with your writing skills! Just make sure you don’t write some kind of poem with a word on every line because you feel like slacking. Make it substantial 🙂 Don’t write more than 3 pages though — Focus! MAKE IT NEW! Don’t hand in some old piece you have from some other class, project, or endeavor.
You can honestly write about whatever you like, I do not have a preference.
Thank you
