Written Quiz #2
8448DIRECTIONS
Write a page and a half mini-essay/test essay/written quiz. Do not write more than 2 full pages. Below are the directives and length requirements for EACH PART of your essay. See the attached Example for extensive discussion of requirements in the margins.
There are so many direction comments that some of them don’t show all the content of the comment. So, be sure to click the arrow in the bottom of the comment box to read all directions. Also, if you use the document as a template for your own assignment — which isn’t a bad idea — be sure to delete all the comments before submitting. (…See how I used a dash in the last sentence? Check the Example for more discussion on dashes…).
By the way, become conscious of the time it takes you to write an “academic” page. This will help you in writing projects you have that have a deadline. This assignment probably takes anyone 1.5 to 2 hours — NOT INCLUDING THE ACTUAL READING OF THE TEXTS! Those that struggle with writing might take up to 4 hours. Know who you are.
The Example was written by Ponyboy Goldman, he told me he took one hour for the first session where he wrote the Setup/Focus/and Proof. Then, he took another hour to write the Extension, thesaura-size, and clean up his writing. He took 10 minutes to get a G&P Review before submitting. He took another 5 minutes to make the edits that the G&P Reviewer suggested. Know that MS Word and other programs offer a feature that automatically records dates and times a doc was worked on. So, you might use that! Do you like music when you write? Do you like quiet? Mornings? Nights? Know what it takes for you to create an academic page, and then you can schedule accordingly. You will meet deadlines.
REQUIREMENTS
SETUP: (25 pts) Define the critical theory that you will use. DO NOT USE BIOGRAPHICAL THEORY; it either requires an outside source to verify biography and/or it’s too easy and obvious. Feel free to paraphrase from the Literary Theory document I gave you in Week 3. Do not cite from the document though. Use a thesaurus and paraphrase. Lit Theories, at this point, are common knowledge. See Example. (Length Required: 2-3 sentences)
FOCUS: (15 pts) Give a sentence that clearly connects the theory to your assigned reading. See Example. (Length Required: 1 sentence)
PROOF: (80 pts – 20 pts for each part of the Academic Formula; see Examples) Using at least 2 textual citations from your reading, prove that your theory is insightful as to analyzing the story, play, or poem. Use the Academic Formula ENTIRELY and EXACTLY. Thesaura-size. See Example. (Length Required: Half page)
EXTENSION: (80 pts – 20 pts for each part of the Academic Formula; see Examples) Finally, introduce another reading. Make a connection between the text discussed in your Setup/Focus/Proof with a new text. This text will be also be given in the Colloquium. The connection is all up to you. DO NOT MENTION Lit Theory. It’s the Extension! So, be sure it’s NEW and INTERESTING. You can make a connection to theme, setting, character, plot, etc. Browse the units of your textbook for ideas. Use at least 2 citations from the new text. Thesaura-size. Use the Academic Formula ENTIRELY and EXACTLY. See Example. (Length Reguired: Half page)
I have attached a sample of how it needs to be.
