Text Exemplar Exercise

Here’s the steps I would take.
1. Pick a grade level and ELL level. (ELL levels are generally Begining, Intermediate and Advanced.) Write this out specifically in the rationale and/or start off the assignment with this.
2. Open up the Common Core State Standards, Appendix B and chose a reading exemplar.
3. Figure out what tense the story is written in. Be specific.
4. Create a worksheet to help students identify the various verb forms used within the passage and how the various verb forms contribute to the author’s purpose. Look online for examples of worksheets for verbs in reading.
This assignment is different than just asking about what tense students can fine. It’s about explaing how verb tense, such as present, past, etc. and aspect, such as simple (or indefinite), perfect, progressive (or continuous), and perfect progressive (or perfect continuous), convey meaning. (If the story is in past tense, what does that tell you about the story? What do you infer from something being written in future tense? You’ll need to know what the tenses mean).
5. Include a 250-500 word rationale justifying your approach to teaching ELLs about the differences in meaning that different verb forms can convey.
You will need to cite at least two things: the research that justifies how and why you picked that verb tense and the exemplar. (Hint: all of this should be found in your readings this week.)
Do Grade 3 and let’s do intermediate level
