My parents’ discipline was the hardest thing I ever had to appreciate. I didn’t like time outs. I didn’t like to be spanked. I hated discipline all the way around. Now that I have kids of my own, I really understand the importance and the value of discipline. Believers should appreciate God’s discipline. In an analysis of Hebrews 12:4-11, believers should learn to appreciate their Father’s discipline.
God’s discipline is never excessive (vs. 4). God will never take your discipline too far. He knows exactly how to get our attention and lovingly bring us back to the path of righteousness. God never disciplines out of anger. He only disciplines out of love. God’s discipline is an expression of Fatherly love (5-8). You never have to wonder whether or not God loves you because He chastens those He loves. We never have to be discouraged when we are being rebuked by Him, either. God deals with his children to remind us that we are not illegitimate.
God’s discipline is sensible (v. 9-10). My father disciplined me as a child and sometimes as a young adult, which caused me to respect him. When God disciplines His children, He disciplines them sensibly, which should lead His children to respect Him even more. God’s discipline keeps us from hurting ourselves. His discipline will prove to be the best for us in the long haul. God’s discipline is also productive (v.11). I told my dad that my friends didn’t get chastened by their parents all the time. I’ve learned over the years that no discipline seems joyful for the present, but it’s painful and yields fruit. No pain, no gain! God’s discipline is always best! Appreciate God’s discipline!
