This response will prepare you for the Research Film Analysis paper and your Poetry Project.
Length requirement: One and a half pages
First, read “A Rose for Emily” in the Reading Materials, Short Story Module and “Richard Cory” in the Reading Materials, Poems Module.
Based on your reading of A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner and Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson, answer one of the following questions:
Miss Emily is an outsider in her town. At the end, we find out what she has done to Homer Baron. In this essay, persuade the reader that the town either is or is not complicit in what Miss Emily has done to Homer.
Richard Cory is also an outsider in his town. At the end, we find out what he has done to himself. In this essay, persuade the reader that the town either was or was not complicit in what Richard Cory has done to himself.
Note: Full paragraphs will have a topic sentence and approximately 8 or more sentences. If a paragraph has more than 3 examples/quotes, you might think of dividing it into two smaller ideas. Avoid summarizing. Instead, analyze by giving specific examples as shown in the documents in the Writing Information Module.
1. Begin your answer by stating the title of the story in quotation marks and the authors name plus a very short summary of the story/poem. (3 sentences + thesis)
2. Use 2 examples + at least one short quote per paragraph. Make sure to explain each example/quote.
3. Citations for poems are different than for other sources as you will use the line number in the citation rather than the page.
Remember to also use the authors name in the citation.
4. Do no use 1st or 2nd person, and do not say in my opinion or I believe/think. (There is a document in your Writing Information Module about avoiding these.)
5.Follow correct guidelines for writing about literature as outlined in your materials in How to Write a Literary Analysis located in your Writing Tips Module.
6. Don’t forget to include a works cited page.
