Pay-for-performance is a paraglidingconcept for programs targeted at enhancing health care quality, reliability andperceived benefits. These provisions offer financial incentives for hospitals,doctors, and other health care professionals to adopt such reforms and achievebetter results for patients. Policymakers and private and public payers,including Medicare and Medicaid, have made pay-for-performance common. TheAffordable Care Act specifically extends the use of pay-for-performanceprograms in Medicare and promotes the expansion of pay-for-performance programs.The question is if or can pay-for-performance be effective in healthcare at increasingquality, efficiency and improving patient care.
