Introduction:

Chapter 1 has introduced you to 3 basic ways of understanding Art: types of Art, its content, and the different ways in which we critically analyze it (critical analysis). Understanding these basic ingredients is a first step towards better understanding a piece of art. This assignment is designed to help you put these pieces together for several pieces of art that you will choose from a museum.  It also asks you to analyze the museum itself – what is its specialty? What authority does the museum give to the artworks that you have chosen to analyze? 

Much of the artwork that we enjoy is kept safe and made available to us to see through museums. There are many kinds of museums that show art. Some museums are Art museums (Minneapolis Institute of Art, otherwise known as the Mia).  Some art is shown in museums whose purpose is different from art, but that uses art to tell its story.  (A good example of this is the Bell Museum in Saint Paul – it is a Natural History Museum, but it always has several art displays by artists who integrate science and nature into their works). 

The best way to see Art is in person. Seeing the texture of a carved wood mask or the scale of a large landscape painting isnt the same by looking at a digital image of the work. Visiting a museum is one of the best ways to gain this experience and this assignment is asking you to visit a museum and analyze what you see based on your new knowledge from chapter 1.  I highly recommend that you opt to visit the Mia (Minneapolis Institute of Art). It is free. It is open every day except for Monday and it is very safe. However, if you feel unsafe to visit the Mia in person, there is an option to do a virtual visit to one of two museums to accommodate your safety. 

Instructions:

Choose the museum that you would like to visit from the list at the top of the assignment. If you choose to visit the Mia in person follow these instructions:

Choose a date and time to visit the Museum. Make a FREE reservation by going to the Mia website. (follow this LINK). 

Walk around. Plan to spend at least 1 hour at the museum.  Take a friend! Really enjoy your time. Choose at least 2 different works from what you see in the collection. Please choose pieces that capture your heart and your mind. Take a photo of the 2 works you choose. You will upload that photo to the worksheet for the assignment.

Copy and paste the image of the pieces you have taken into the worksheet. 

Answer the questions for EACH piece separately as noted on the worksheet. 

If you choose to do a virtual visit, please follow these instructions:

Visit the museums main web page to get an understanding of what kind of museum it is and what its mission is to the public. Take a virtual tour of the museum to better understand it as a whole. Be sure to look at at least 25 pieces of art. (you will be asked to list the 25 works you saw in the museum). Answer the questions about the museum on the worksheet. 

Choose at least 2 different works from the museums online database of their collection. Please choose pieces that capture your heart and your mind. 

Copy and paste the image of the pieces you have chosen into the worksheet. 

Answer the questions for EACH piece separately as noted on the worksheet.
