Spiegelmans decision to portray Jews as mice at first to me I thought was weird and offensive, until I realized the empowerment of his decision. Spiegelman’s use of mice to depict the Jews as the Nazis considering them vermin. Spiegelman isnt making fun of anybody here, he is endeavoring to utilize ethnic stereotypes to break down the moral story that a few individuals feel or felt was true. Both could be shown as offensive or empowering. I believe the book uses animals rather than human characters for a personification feel. They utilize these types of animals to create up the distinctive societies amid the Holocaust. The Posts as pigs the Jews are the mice, and the cats are Nazi Germans. I feel that Spiegelman uses animals rather than people since it gives us a better understanding of what sort of animals make up the distinctive sorts of movement that are being talked about. The roles of the masks in the book depict human-like figures and human personalities. Vladek is wearing a pig mask, implying he is masking his Jewish personality and showing himself absolutely as a Pole. A mask stands for concealing or assuming a different identity, but in Maus they are used to signify identity as well, so that it becomes an integral part of life narrative. They disrupt the metaphors because it is a literal representation. Art himself wears a mask at the beginning of the chapter of the Time Flies, to conceal his identity, how he feels and the way he is.
