Leadership, in simple terms, is the behavior played by an individual directing a task in a group towards a shared or set goal. The 3 main leadership styles, as described by Kurt Lewin, a psychologist in1939 are Authoritarian (Autocratic), Participative (Democratic), and Delegative (Laissez-Faire). The Healthcare industry represents a system of processes, people, and resources. This leads to different styles of leadership to achieve the desired outcome of high-quality patient care. (Alilyyani et al.,2018)
Many people in my career helped shape me as a professional, but one name that comes to my mind is Ms. Kelly M. She is a PT with a vision to improve the healthcare system within and beyond her scope of practice. Kelly and I were working as therapists in a skilled nursing facility, and a few years later, Kelly became our rehab director. As said earlier, she is a passionate, driven, and professional with a vision that aims to improve service quality and uplift the entire rehab community. Her style of leadership was more autocratic.
I think that the authoritarian leadership style is not wrong, but it should be used as a change in leadership style in time-sensitive situations. Also, the former leader had a strong delegative style. This caused a drastic change and turmoil in the practice area, causing unacceptance towards the current leadership style.
I strongly think Kelly had a great vision, and I admired her energy and enthusiasm with transparency in her work. But dictating goals is not well accepted and accounted for. If I happen to be in Kellys position, I would have given enough time for the therapists or the department to get used to the new leadership style, built trust, idealized influenced behavior, and adopted a more transformational path. This would allow the coworkers to adapt, understand and participate in making the set goals come true (Poels et al.,2020).
Effective leadership is a complex and highly valued component of the healthcare system. The new leader with a futuristic vision is the one who role models the balance between autonomy and accountability, emphasizes teamwork, and focuses on improving patient outcomes. Healthcare leaders must work effectively and collaboratively across discipline and organizational boundaries, where titles are not always linked to leadership roles. (Van Diggele et al.,2020)
