Inquiry Essay: Millennial Burnout
Assignment Instructions:
- Assignment: Read at least two perspectives addressing a topic you care about, preferably (but not necessarily) something we’ve read, watched, or discussed in class. In an essay, explore the perspectives by noting where different authors address the same or similar questions, and compare their answers. Decide which views seem most valid and which have deepened your own understanding of the topic and its relevance to your life.
- Topic & Focus: Pick a topic of current interest on which many people are expressing their views. The point is to explore the views, examine and question them carefully. Keep your mind open until you have explored the viewpoints, then draw your conclusions.
- Audience: Think of your audience as people interested in your topic but who have not read what you have read. Consequently, you will need to tell your readers enough about each view for them to know who says what, using quotations and paraphrases as needed.
- Voice & Style: Imagine that you are participating in a conversation with your readers about the perspectives and your opinions of them. You should sound fair, thoughtful, and receptive, willing to ponder points of view you do not find persuasive but which may contain valuable points of insights. Be willing also to look for problems in perspectives you do find persuasive.
Strategies for Comparing Perspectives:
- With each reading:
- Paraphrase or summarize the main points
- Find the questions that each point answers
- Write down your response to each point
- Keep track of connections across perspectives
- Maintain an exploratory stance, rather than an adversarial one (keep your tone fair and neutral)
