Discretionary Benefits
There are three categories of discretionary benefits: Protection Programs, Paid Time Off, and Services.
Protection Programs are such things as health insurance, long & short-term disability pay, life insurance, and retirement.
Paid Time Off is exactly that, being paid for a certain number of hours an employee is given annually to do with what they want. Sometimes PTO is one big bank of time, which needs to be used for vacation, sick pay, funeral leave, or personal time. Other times there are different banks of time off for sick pay and/or vacation.
Services are a benefit about the employee as a person. Services include (but not always) family assistance programs such as daycare for children or elders, employee assistance programs for those who need counseling due to depression, alcohol & drugs, grieving, smoking cessation, or wellness programs.
