criminal justice-The meaning of justice can reveal itself in the presence of injustice.
Prompt:
The meaning of justice can reveal itself in the presence of injustice. Drawing from the materials that you have been assigned, identify and explain three theoretical concepts from the readings, lectures, and videos that you think are essential for thinking about justice.
Then, use these ideas to analyze an injustice that’s happened (or is happening) in a current event (ex. LGBTQ rights, police conduct, global refugee crisis, environmental injustice, etc.). A current event is an event that is presently relevant, and actively happening or has happened recently (within the past couple years). You should cite a specific news story, media publication, or academic journal article as this is where you will be getting your information about the event from. Be sure to choose something that you feel passionate about. Discuss the injustice according to your three theoretical concepts and carefully consider how the injustice relates to larger systems of oppression in the United States. In other words, how do these theories help us to better understand this injustice, and what we can do about it?
Here is a suggested format for the paper:
- Open with a clear and concise introduction paragraph explaining the theories and concepts you will use and what current event you will analyze. Conclude this paragraph with a thesis statement where you name the current event you will analyze and summarize your overall argument (This specific event represents these concepts because….or These concepts help us understand this specific event because…).
- Then spend approximately the next 2 1/2 pages very carefully and systematically explaining what the theories and concepts are that you are using. This is where you want to operationalize (ie. explain how and why it works, what it is saying, and why it is important) these theories and concepts using the readings, videos, and class discussions.
- Spend the last approximately 2 1/2 pages to connect your theories and concepts to the injustice(s) you want to address. It’s very important that you go beyond simply stating that they are related. You must carefully demonstrate how they are related, particularly how the theories and concepts show up in the current event.
- Finally, make sure to provide a clear and concise closing paragraph that neatly summarizes the arguments and conclusions of your paper.
