Consumers purchase products because they have a need that must fulfilled on a psychological level. This explains why consumers almost never forget to purchase food on a weekly basis, but items such as batteries or stamps or often pushed aside until you absolutely need them. You are more motivated to purchase food for your survival.
Businesses often use these psychological factors to appeal to their customers and motivate them to purchase a product. This motivation theory stems from a model of human needs developed by psychologist Abraham Harold Maslow.
