Using the disorder and populations in the example from Week 6, begin by researching goal setting and treatment planning consideration for: 1) African-American young adult female with ADHD and 2) Asian male chilld presenting with ADHD. What you are working toward is learning to identify factors that could potentially impact treatment planning as a result of cultural considerations during the assessment. You will ultimately want to compare and contrast cultural considerations between the two populations when identifying needs and goals for your populations. For example, both the Hispanic and Asian populations present from collectivist cultures, so what could this potentially mean when developing a culturally sensitive treatment plan?
Part 2 Cultural Considerations in Two Treatment Approaches
Now choose two treatment approaches based on the disorder. For example, we chose depression previously, so useful therapeutic approaches might include cognitive behavioral therapy and associated techniques and interpersonal therapy. When choosing two approaches, these do not necessarily need to be those that are shown to be effective for treating the disorder. The approaches you choose can be approaches that you identify with or ones that might be appropriate for the culture. For example, given that the Hispanic and Asian cultures tend to be more collectivist, a systems approach to treatment might be appropriate. You will then research the effectiveness of your chosen therapeutic approaches when used in treating the populations you chose and compare and contrast the findings. You will also want to discuss any modifications to the approaches that might be necessary to remain culturally sensitive.
