analytic essay
INSTRUCTIONS
Please include with your essay an introduction which clearly states the purpose and/or thesis of your paper and a roadmap of the main points you will cover in your essay. Include also a conclusion
which summarizes your thesis and work. The entire essay is to be between 4-5 pages in length, in double-spaced 11- or 12-point Times New Roman font. Please plan on using spell check and
grammar check—a “pro tip” is to read your paper aloud before submission, as this is an easy way to catch mistakes in advance.
All citations need to be in either MLA or APA style, including references to the myths you are using for evidence. A works cited at the end of the paper is also required, and is not included in the 4- to
5-page count.

In this analytic essay, you will fully answer the prompt below in your own words, demonstrating your mastery of the historical and cosmological analytical approaches to mythology. Please answer in
essay form the questions below, and plan on using copious examples from the five myths of this module to back up your answers.
Apply the historical approach to the five myths in this module (Norse, Yoruban, Zuni, Indian, and Japanese), as the approach is outlined in the module exploration. What historical data do you
see from these myths, and what kinds of pictures does this data paint about life in each of these cultures at the time they were composed? Please use specific examples from the myths in
demonstrating your answer.
Likewise, apply the cosmological approach to the five myths of this module, as the approach is outlined in the module exploration. What did these particular ancient and medieval cultures
believe about the nature of the universe and its “blueprint”? Demonstrate your argument with examples from the five myths.
Next, explore relevance to modern narratives by applying the historical and cosmological approaches to a modern narrative of your choosing from anytime in the past century. Because this
narrative is not included in our module readings, you will also need to provide a one-paragraph summary of the narrative for your reader. What historical data and cosmology do you see in this
narrative? Please use specific information in your answer.
Lastly, what do you think is the benefit of using these two particular approaches, historical and cosmological, in understanding mythology in particular as well as narratives in general? Are there
any gains to using these approaches and, if so, what are they?
