During the global recession of 2008 and 2009, there were many accusations of unethical behavior by Wall Street executives, financial managers, and other corporate officers. At that time, an article appeared that suggested that part of the reason for such unethical business behavior may have stemmed from the fact that cheating had become more prevalent among business students, according to a February 10, 2009, article in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The article reported that 56% of business students admitted to cheating at some time during their academic career as compared to 47% of nonbusiness students.
Cheating has been a concern of the dean of the college of business at Bo Diddley Tech (BDT) for several years. Some faculty members in the college believe that cheating is more widespread at BDT than at other universities, whereas other faculty members think that cheating is not a major problem in the college. To resolve some of these issues, the dean commissioned a study to assess the current ethical behavior of business students at BDT. As a former college athlete herself, the dean believed that the spirit of fair play students develop as part of participating in athletics would make them less likely to cheat. As part of this study, an anonymous exit survey was administered to a sample of 240 students from this year’s graduating class, half of whom were business students and half of whom were not. The survey asked various questions, including the student’s college and if the student was an athlete or not. Responses of the various questions were fed into a computer algorithm that made a quantitative determination as to whether the student should be considered a “cheater” or not. The results are in the attached Excel spreadsheet, “Benchmark – Bo Diddley Tech Data Set.”
Prepare a managerial report as part of your submission to the dean of the college that summarizes your assessment of the nature of cheating at BDT. Be sure to include the following items in your written report.
Utilize the data set provided by the instructor in the Excel spreadsheet, “Benchmark – Bo Diddley Tech Data Set” (60 records per student).
Submit the Excel data calculations (Alpha 0.05).
Make a pivot table with: Business Student (Rows), Athlete (Rows), Cheated (Columns), and Cheated (Summed Value).
Create a bar chart showing cheating by athletes and business students.
Determine if there is a statistical difference between nonathlete BDT business students and the national average for business students as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Determine if there is a statistical difference between athlete BDT business students and the national average for business students as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Determine if there is a statistical difference between BDT business students and the national average for business students as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Determine if there is a statistical difference between BDT nonbusiness students and the national average for nonbusiness students as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Utilizing the data you have analyzed, write a managerial report of 500-800 words for the dean. The managerial report needs to include an introduction, analysis, conclusion, and a minimum of three supporting references.
Introduction (Define): Explain, in your own words, why you are providing this report and the problem(s) you are trying to solve.
Collect: Describe the data set you used.
Organize: Describe your pivot table.
Visualize: Include and describe your bar chart.
Analyze: Provide a summary of your conclusions based on the four population proportion hypothesis tests.
Ethical Summary: The dean has expressed a concern related to the amount of cheating currently taking place at BDT and has strongly suggested that you “tweak” the statistical data such that they favor the image of the university. Discuss the potential use of unethical manipulation of statistical data to provide a biased outcome as well as the ethical counter proposal you would offer the dean in this scenario.
Conclusion: What advice would you give to the dean based upon your analysis of the data?
You are required to submit your Excel data analysis along with your written report.

Ethical behavior of Business Students of Bo Diddley Tech School
A managerial report is a cumulative analyzed data that gives insights about issues that should be addresses and guides the process of decision making. A review of practices related to business statistics is the benchmark that enables the understanding of the number of students that cheat at Bo Diddley Tech School and determining the students’ abilities for strategy implementation in a mock situation. Firstly, students are creating visualizations and charts for a random set of students. Next, there is the calculation and interpretation of the statistical differences between business and non-business students to athlete to non-athlete students. Using the difference stated, the students then conduct an analysis of the null and alternate hypotheses before reporting their findings to determine the said hypothesis’ rejection or non-rejection. The students have been provided with the data and format ahead of time and the individual reports will be utilized for gaining scope on larger samples in group presentations.
Data collection
The instructor provided data on an excel worksheet. The data provided became random after it was sorted with each student allowed to analyze a completely different set of numbers. From the original spreadsheet provided, the first 100 students’ data that was made random, from Bo Diddley Tech was copied and placed onto a separate page for student benchmark. The data lacked bias because it was random, and contained students in every category of the four. From the analysis of the sets of data, there were 100 students of which 48 studied business with 52 being non-business students. Secondary values were assigned to the students for athletes or non-athletes. The data gotten was used to make inferences, create visualizations, make calculations.
Data Visualization and Organization
Taking the data copied and pasted into the secondary worksheet a pivot table was created. Through the excel formatting the pivot table data was selected as well as the location of said table. The pivot table is labeled ‘Count of Cheated’ and has four columns and seven rows. The first column had the qualitative types of students followed in the second through third column the number of students who were either cheaters or non-cheaters. The final column had totals for the second and third’s data. The pivot table condensed 100 different student’s data in to a clear and easy to read format. Using this pivot table a bar chart was created using the excel bar graph function, reference Figure 1 below.
Figure 1; Information on the numerical values of business and non-business students. The data is further categorized for athlete and non-athlete students.
Data analysis
The dean had predicted that athletes were less likely to cheat due to a nature for ‘fair play’. In Figure 1 above this was true for the non-business students. From the data it can be assumed that the dean’s hypothesis should be rejected, the athletes in business school were 50% likely to cheat. There were 30 athletes in the business school that were analyzed and exactly half were cheaters. In the non-business category, the athletes had a lower percentage of cheaters. The Dean also had speculated that the percentage of cheaters in the business school at Bo Diddley Tech would be higher than the national average of 56%. We can consider this to be another null hypothesis from the dean, which was rejected because the percentage of cheaters in the business school was 54%. Meaning that p > po was the hypothesis that would not be rejected. In every category measured the result was the same, the national average was higher than the measured average from the given data.
Mock Ethical Dilemma
According to the assignment the dean has asked for the data when published to be changed or represented in a way that allows the university to look favorable. There are two ways that a researcher could attempt to create data in a favorable light for the university. The first would be to change the data. Create fake data and report on the fake data that makes it seem as though the university does not have as many cheaters. The second way would be to create charts and tables that are biased and create an illusion for the reader that the university has less cheaters. The national average comes from the Chronicle of Higher Education, a notable science journal. John Bailar actually wrote an article for The Chronicles of Higher Education detailing the threats that face the integrity of science, he believes that scientists or researchers often tend to skew their data and that the general population will be unaware of the serious biases in the reported findings.
Conclusion
The researcher should let the dean know that manipulation of data would be unethical. If she would like the data to portray the university in a good light it would be better to stick to the truth. Also, it is important to avoid biases. From the data it can be assumed that the average number of cheaters in the college is less than the national average. Stress this fact to the readers because it is the truth. If the university were to be caught falsifying data about cheaters there would be some serious irony and possible consequences. The researcher should suggest clear and relevant data tables and a report to match. The dean should also be relieved, her prediction about students cheating more than the national average was rejected. Using this she should continue to fight against cheaters in her school, but not prioritize it over possibly more concerning matters.
