The technological advancement in the 20th and 21st centuries have played a significant role in simplifying people’s daily activities around the globe. However, the same is also responsible for jeopardizing consumer’s privacy, as they are not in control of their data online. One of the significant issues related to consumer privacy today is device tracking (Aten, 2017). With the widespread use of smartphones and other personal gadgets such as a laptops and tablets, consumers are at the risk of being tracked by communication companies and government agencies. Another significant issue affecting technological consumers is the illegal use of personal data by businesses. Consumers are duped into providing their data online by various websites, which is later employed by advertising companies to make personalized ads. For instance, multinational companies such as Google and Facebook have been accused of using the users’ data illegally to make billions of dollars through advertisement (Sheehan, 2018). In addition, consumers are also at the risk of webcam hacking, which threatens their privacy, especially while online (Bélanger, 2011). However, the consumer might protect themselves from these threats by avoiding sharing their personal information online. Consumers should also secure their devices from third parties before using them.
A good example of an advertisement taken from the Internet is the Coca-Cola – Kos Deg ad found on YouTube. The commercial ad was also aired on a Norwegian television in January 2019. The advert meets the adequate ethical standards for advertising, as it includes all the necessary factors. For instance, it has an object of truth, where it does not exaggerate the quality of the product (Coca-Cola, 2017). The information in the advert also observes the highest personal ethics. In addition, the advert exercises full disclosure and transparency to the targeted customers by outlining the product name, prices, and content.
