Regulations and standards of practice demand that pharmacy prepared products are of the highest quality. The following list includes organizations that help regulate the quality of pharmacy prepared medications & products:
• USP (United States Pharmacopeia) – is the official public standards-setting
authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary
supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured and sold in the United
States. USP sets standards for the quality of these products and works with
healthcare providers to help them reach the standards.
• Joint Commission (formerly Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations or JCAHO) – accredits and certifies health care organizations and
programs. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized
nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to
meeting certain performance standards. Their goal is continuously improve the
safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health
care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in
health care organizations.
• FDA (Food and Drug Administration) – responsible for protecting the public
health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary
drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics,
and products that emit radiation
• Boards of Pharmacy (BOP) – boards of pharmacy are responsible for setting the
rules and regulations for the practice of pharmacy within its respective state.
Each state has its own BOP.
• ASHP (American Society of Health System Pharmacists) – set policies and
guidelines that represent a consensus of professional judgment, expert opinion,
and documented evidence. They provide guidance and direction to pharmacy
practitioners and other healthcare practitioners who affect pharmacy practice
• CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) – ensures effective, up-to-date
health care coverage and promotes quality care for beneficiaries

medication errors are reduced and that they produce and prepare high quality products
