Family and Community in the Classroom
Create a 12‐15 slide digital presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Prezi or other presentation software) that includes a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.
Include the following:
Academic Year Summary – describe the major academic subjects and standards you will be covering during the school year, with examples.
Family Communication – address how you will promote respectful, reciprocal relationships with families. Include how you will regularly communicate with families, as well as how and when families may access you. Additionally, include your plan to communicate with families whose first language is not English.
Resources for Families ‐ include 6‐8 online and community resources you can provide families related to child development (physical, academic, social/behavioral) and health promotion for families with children both with and without exceptionalities.
Provide 2‐3 online and community resources for families related to crises support. Additionally, include at least two school resources that are available to children experiencing crises for families with children both with and without exceptionalities.
Volunteer Opportunities – describe volunteer opportunities for families and community members that align to and support the students in achieving academic standards for the year. Include a plan to solicit input from students, colleagues and families regarding the volunteer opportunities. For example, if your social studies content includes a review of the community, you could request volunteers from nearby businesses to visit the classroom and describe their jobs.
In addition, create a 1‐ or 2‐page flyer for families to reference that will help to promote collaboration and a positive and supportive relationship between you and the families. Include the following information from your presentation: How families may access you, the community resources, and highlights of the volunteer opportunities.
Include at least three scholarly sources.
Prepare the presentation assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
