Childhood Nutrition Supplementation
Childhood Nutrition Supplementation
Childhood nutrition supplementation and adult productivity in Guatemala is a significant study that has shown some positive outcomes. The study has fundamentally assisted in shedding light on the value of nutritional supplementation among the children. A group of children both male and female were given “atole” dietary supplement rich in protein and energy while the other group of children both male and female were given “fresco” a supplement that provided only no fat or protein and offered little energy (Hoddinott et al., 2008).
Later, after over ten years, the researchers compared the effects of the nutritional supplement of these participants on schooling, adult intellectual functioning, child birth-weight, and individual productivity. On controlling the school completion age, it was discovered that receiving the atole supplement had a positive impact on both male and female to higher intellectual functioning at adulthood. The investigation depicts that children who were given protein and energy supplement (atole) had higher scores on both tests as grownups compared to the children who used fresco (Maluccio et al., (2009).
Additionally, the research investigated the association between the economic productivity of the participants evaluated via their wages and the supplements they received from the INCAP nutrition study. Male participants who received atole shown 46% higher wages than male participants who received fresco in the study (Maluccio et al., (2009).
Overall, the study projects positive outcomes for the children who were served with protein and energy-based atole nutritional supplement compared to those provided with fresco-based supplements that lacked protein and had a small amount of energy (Hoddinott et al., 2008). Atole supplements are associated with higher literacy skills and cognitive development for both men and women, higher wages and higher birth-weight for women. Therefore, the study suggests that the type of supplement provided at an early stage of life critically influences the child’s remaining part of life either positively or negatively.
