Prompt: Given that COVID-19
Application Paper—Educational Psychology Fall 2020
Make sure you read the prompt below carefully and respond to each component of it. Additionally, the prompt includes required references that must be in your paper to help you answer the prompt. These are a minimum – you are welcome to use more references than the ones that are required (as long as you also include the required references). For each paper, keep these general points in mind:
Formatting and length: Each paper should be at least 3 double-spaced pages total. Use 12 point Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins all around. Do not include any extra spaces between paragraphs or sections. You should include a title page that contains your name, the date, and the semester and course. This page will not count towards your page total. In addition, you will submit a reference page that is on a separate page that is formatted in APA style.
References and Citations: Your references section and in-text citations must be formatted in APA style. See the resources on Blackboard for help formatting your references section. In addition, you should include in-text citations whenever you are discussing information you found in one of your sources. You should include in-text citations to all the required references so I can see how you used them in your paper.
Grading criteria:
For each paper, you will be graded on the following areas:
Clarity and comprehensiveness: You will be graded on how clearly you communicated your ideas as well as how comprehensively you answered the questions. Be sure to address each component of the prompt and clearly demonstrate your knowledge and understanding based on the textbook and your additional research.
Required references: You will be graded on the inclusion of all required references as well as your use of APA style. Be sure to double-check the assignment prompts to ensure you have included ALL the required references. Be sure to double check your use of APA style – make note of italics, punctuation, etc. in addition to all the required information being included in the citation and in the correct order.
Grammar/style and Organization: You will be graded on your ability to communicate effectively using grammar conventions and an appropriate style. In academic papers, you should communicate clearly and directly, back up your assertions with evidence, have a cohesive and organized structure, and communicate without grammatical or typographical errors.
Originality and Logic of Connections with Course Material: You will be graded on your ability to synthesize information from the course material from the textbook, and at least one peer-reviewed journal article. You may discuss your ideas with other classmates but be sure that what you write about reflects some of your original thoughts and ideas.
General tips:
-Make sure all the information in your paper is summarized and properly cited. Direct quotations should be used minimally, if at all. If you do include a direct quote (and again, I discourage this), it must be noted as a quotation (in quotation marks) and needs to have a full citation with the page number in APA style. See link: APA style.
-Use APA citation style for your paper. If you are unfamiliar with APA style, you can find web resources below. I am most interested in your in-text citations and your references section being formatted in APA style; there is no need to add an abstract, running head, etc. that you would normally find in APA-formatted research paper.
-Don’t wait until the last minute to complete the assignment. Ask questions early and often. If you aren’t sure what to pick or whether something “counts” towards the required references, or how to format your references – email me (of course, you can email me with other questions as well!)
Application Paper 1
Due: 9/28 by 11:59 PM
Prompt: Given that COVID-19 has forced many teachers and students to adapt to mostly virtual learning environments, it is perhaps more important than ever before for students to become self-regulated in their learning and behavior. First, choose one of the following grade levels (3-5, 6-8, or 9-12) you would be teaching in an online learning environment. Second, using important concepts and ideas in Chapter 10 about self-regulated behavior and learning, what are at least 3 strategies you could use as a teacher (or as a parent) to develop your students’ self-regulation skills. Describe the use of these strategies within the context of an online learning environment. Third, choose one theory of motivation discussed in Chapter 11 (e.g., expectancies and values, self-determination, attributions, goal theories). Describe the main ideas and concepts of the theory you selected using information from the chapter. Based on the ideas of the theory you selected, what are some concrete strategies/approaches (supported by research) that you could use to maintain students’ motivation and engagement in an online environment. Use at least one peer-reviewed journal article pertaining to self-regulated learning or achievement motivation to inform your responses. Please be sure to consider the grade level you selected in your responses throughout the paper.
Required references: Textbook, peer-reviewed, empirical journal article on self-regulation and/or on student motivation.
