The Confederate States has won the Civil War thanks to Lee’s victory at Gettysburg (July 1-2, 1863), which destroyed the Army of the Potomac, and Bragg’s victory at Chickamauga (September 18-20, 1863) which annihilated Rosecrans’ Army of the Cumberland. Lee occupied Philadelphia, Washington, and Baltimore, and Lincoln fled to Boston. The only remaining Union field army was Grant’s Army of the Tennessee, which abandoned its conquest of Vicksburg and moved to New York to protect Lincoln against Lee’s army. Great Britain intervened to stop the bloodshed and brokered the Treaty of Arlington, which gave the eleven Confederate States their independence, and added the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) below the line of 36o30’. Slavery was abolished in both American Republics. In subsequent wars, the Confederate States drove the French out of Mexico and gained the states of Chihuahua, the “Republic of Rio Grande” (northeastern Mexico), and the “Republic of Sonora” (Sonora and Baja California) as well as the French West Indies, and defeated Spain in Cuba, gaining that island and Puerto Rico. The United States bought Russian America and in the Pacific and added the Danish Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, the Confederates seized French Polynesia and the Americans got Wake Island. Resentments still exist, and one issue is the raids by Indians on western farmsteads and their escape into Oklahoma. On November 27, 1868, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, under orders from his immediate superior, Lt. General Philip Sheridan, crossed the international border and attacked the Cheyenne survivors of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre in their village on the Washita River in Oklahoma. To Custer’s dismay, five villages of Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Comanche were downstream on the Washita River; their 2500 warriors rushed to investigate and wiped out Custer’s force of 545 troopers of the U.S. 7th Cavalry.
