To make a determination on whether scriptures would be universal or limited, we first examine the criteria based on the presupposition that the Bible alone in the final authority for faith and living (McQuilkin, page 307). From that, there is a message that will show that man must be obedient and follow the instructions that are from Christ. The inspired word of God can be from a different time that can be used in this day and time which may not be culturally based.
To get a thorough understanding, one should read the text to understand a history and culture, because teachings give a cultural evaluation of the audience, and discerning the intended point of the passage. The audience is described in Matthew 10: 1-10 are the disciples, who were instructed to go to another audience, who are described in Matthew 10: 6 as the lost sheep of Israel. The author designated his recipients, when he Identified his twelve disciples and the sheep of Israel. Every teaching of scripture is to be received universally unless the bible itself limits the audience. I see that this particular scripture is limited to just the disciples and lost sheep of Israel. When the Jesus says in verse 5 of Mathew 10, do not go among the Gentiles or any town of the Samaritans, this show’s the reader that the message was not intended for everyone.
This particular text reflects a universal cultural pattern that is normative, because the bible makes no distinction between cultural universals and cultural specifics. I realized that the bible was written by people who live so long ago for an audience that needed direction. I can say that the message that was being delivered by the disciples is still be taught now. The only difference is we are in a different time, but heaven is still upon us. In John 14:2-3, he says My fathers house has many room, if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? Verse 3, And if I go and prepare a place for you,I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

There are many key factors that play an important role in the interpretation and application of scripture. McQuilkin highlights a crucial point to us in chapter 19 (Identifying the Audience God Intended) in his book Understanding and Applying the Bible. He tells us not only that “we must look to the Bible itself to decide the recipients God intended for any given passage, but that we must also identify key factors which are the context, the audience designated by the author, history, and other Scripture to truly know the audience God intended (McQuilkin 2009, 307). This will help us to know whether the Scripture is universal (applicable to all people) or limited to some specific group or group that does not include us. Many arguments have arisen over this subject regarding the universal and limited interpretation of specific Scripture. However, this discussion will not only give personal views of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 10 universal and limited interpretations, but it will also share which of the instructions in Matthew 10:5-10 should missionaries today obey.
Matthew 10: 5-10 Interpretations
Should the passage of Jesus’ instructions to the disciples found in Matthew 10:5-10 be interpreted as universal or limited? After utilizing the flow chart for applying a Bible passage, I found it quite interesting to determine my interpretation of this passage. My first findings I had to take into consideration was to whom was it addressed (the original listener). I found that the remarkable Jewish flavor of the Gospel of Matthew suggests that his audience was Hellenistic Jews or Jews. Many theologians highlight Matthew’s quotes of the Old Testament prophetic passages as evidence of this claim. The Gospel of Matthew’s purpose has been identified as demonstrating Christ as the King and long-awaited Messiah of Israel. However, chapter 10 is Jesus’ commissioning of the disciples. In verses 5-10, Jesus gives the disciples specific instructions for their mission. Therefore, my findings indicate that this passage of Scripture is indeed limited in the age and condition of its context. Jesus specifically tells the disciples to avoid the towns of Gentiles such as Samaria in this passage as well as the conditions of what not to wear such as sandals or an extra tunic in that day and age. Yet, we find in Matthew 28:16-20 (The Great Commission) where Jesus’ teachings contradict these very instructions. However, I believe Matthew 10:5-10 can be seen as foreshadowing the Great Commission. This allows this passage to be universal on this basis because it helps the reader to understand the history of how the mission of Jesus’ followers evolved from the house of Israel (just the lost sheep of Israel) to Gentile believers in all nations.
In closing, as missionaries today, I believe there is so much we can glean from Matthew 10:5-10 and should obey. Verses 7 and 8 still can be applied and should be obeyed. However, we must go and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the power described in verse 8. Jesus’ teachings in the Great Commission reiterates these instructions for His disciples. However, verses 9 and 10 informs us to understand that God is our sole provider when we surrender all to Him and are led by Him on thes
