1. In Chapter 1 of They Say, I Say, Graff and Birkenstein argue that, as early as possible in a piece of writing, “a writer needs to indicate clearly not only what his or her thesis is, but also what larger conversation that thesis is responding to.” Why do they believe this is important? Explain in your own words the rationale they provide for this advice.

2. Graff and Birkenstein offer four suggestions for beginning an essay with “what others are saying.” Which of these four strategies do you think it most effective and why? Explain, providing examples from your own reading and/or writing experiences.
