Case study 2/ Group C
Being able to treat a patient of a different culture and ethnicity takes knowledge on cultural diversity including the “do’s and don’ts”. As a healthcare provider we must educate yourself on the types of patients we will be treating. Ensuring we are proficient in cultural preferences including religion. According to Ball, “culturally competent care requires that healthcare providers be sensitive to patient’s heritage, sexual orientation, socioeconomic situation, ethnicity and cultural background (Ball, J.E., Flynn, & Solomon, 2019). According to the case study 23-year-old Native American who generally doesn’t seek western medicine for healthcare as a culture is complaining of anxiety. Mental health was identified as the number one health problem confronting American Indian and Alaska Native communities today (Sarache, 2019). This patient needs psychiatric help to manage anxiety, use of marijuana as well as alcohol. This patient will need his diabetes and hypertension managed as well. American Indians/ Alaska Natives also have a high prevalence and risk factors for mental health and suicide, unintentional injuries, obesity, substance use, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDs), teenage pregnancy, diabetes, liver disease and hepatitis. Socioeconomically Native Americans are at or below the poverty level, making it harder to seek medical attention and follow-up care. The 5 questions I would ask using the RESPECT model would be:
Are you having any pain?
Are you sad or feel depressed?
When was the last time you visited a doctor?
How do you manage diabetes and hypertension?
Where do you live?
