Identify how each occurrence of “so” in the Gospel of John (other than John 3:16) is translated. (Note that the Greek word will not necessarily be translated as “so” each time.)
What is the most likely nuance of “so” in John 3:16?
How does this brief word study affect your understanding of John 3:16?
John 3:8 so is used as a consequence or as a result of how the wind blows.
15 so is used as an addition of, like the word too.
21 so is used to show the degree to which something was done, the extent of, or to the degree of, and is used to show purpose.
29 so is used to show a result of an action.
After looking up the word ‘nuance’ to get a correct and full understanding of the word, so (get is, “as a result of”), and not just the understanding the word is used in common practice. I may have a complete understanding of the human authors intended meaning (p.95), before expounding on the word usage of so in this book, I have been enlightened. I can say after reading the many ways the word ‘so’ is used and combining the information I read in chapter seven, “Understanding Human language,” I have a deeper and new understanding of a bible I have read and heard so many times, and one that is so familiar to so many people. I am now also aware of so many preachers, and teachers of the word mis-interpret scripture. There is clearly a required need for hermeneutics.
In this passage the word is mostly used an adverb. It is used to show the result of an action that was performed before it. I must assume that interpreter in translation of the book, took into consideration the difficulties of the English language, and the fact we have many different word usage and spelling for a single word. It is made more difficult when other words associated with it, implies something totally different. With all that being said, my understanding of what the author wanted to relay is this:
Anyone from this day forward who believes, obeys and is a doer of the words of and in, a man who was born of God and is God, will live forever as a result of the actions listed.

The word “so” in the NASB gives off the impression that God loved us in a certain way. It is acting as a modifier to the verb to love. G3779 (“so”) is used in this way as an adverb. An adverb is simply a word that modifies another verb or adjective. Almost all 14 times that “Οὕτως” (G3779) is used in the Gospel of John it is used like this. But sometimes in our English language, we use the word “so” as a conjunction to join words or clauses together. This can lead early interpreters to a slight misunderstanding of the intent of the verse.
Seeing that all the other times the word “Οὕτως” appears in John’s Gospel it is used as an adverb, then it seems to make the most sense to translate it in a similar fashion in John 3:16. This means that a more accurate rendering of the word “so” or “Οὕτως” might be “in this manner” because it would be modifying the verb to love. It’s almost as if we could read it as saying, “For, in this manner, God loved the world…”.
This brief word study shows me that the sentence is less focused on how God and his love for the world go together and is more focused on the manner in which God loved the world – by sending his Son to die for us. The means by which God loved us, and how Jesus died for us on the cross is what is trying to be communicated by the adverb “Οὕτως”. It is intending to communicate purpose rather than combining two thoughts or words.
