Introduction
The case of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is based on a communal quest for a solution related to supply of blood in the local hospital (Swayne, 2008). The modern healthcare has been characterized by increasing cases of various healthcare institutions teaming together to address some of the common challenges they experience (Bosch & Mansell, 2015). As a result, the teaming up is able to provide the organizations with the ability to develop aligned healthcare practices with the aim of providing improved services to the patients.
Definition of the problem
The main problem established in the CBCC case study is referring to the shortage of blood from the earlier blood suppliers to hospitals thus leading to the development of an effective strategy for the affected hospitals. The hospitals were experiencing significant challenges due to the limited amount of blood supply provided from the blood banks. Therefore, the hospitals only accessed insufficient and expensive blood from the earlier suppliers. After a long period of suffering, the regional hospital leaders develop the idea of establishing a long lasting solution by being able to not only improve their blood supply, but increase the availability and reliability of the blood supply. The CBCC was thus established by the community-based hospitals in order to work with the regional hospitals to develop a competent blood bank supply system.
Identification of the stakeholders
The major stakeholder of the organization included the hospitals that took part in the development of CBCC, the American Red Cross, local patients, and various employees and professionals in the blood bank management (Swayne, 2008). Another critical stakeholder in the organization is the local community members who are to be served by the blood from the newly developed blood bank. The community members are also crucial shareholders as they are the majority of the blood donors for the organization (Swayne, Duncan & Ginter, 2008).
Identification and Evaluation of alternative solutions
Based on the challenge of lack of adequate blood supply in the CBCC, there are various although few recommended solutions to the development of the intended long-term performance. One of the solutions is to continue accessing the blood from the traditional means which include the American Red Cross as well as the other major blood banks in the organization. The alternative is to establish strong consumer relations including the expansion of community based services in to attract more donors and volume of collected blood. The first recommendation as indicated above is established with the access to blood shipped and bought for the hospitals to purchase and use in the course of the practice. The second alternative promotes the ability of the regional healthcare institutions to attain autonomy in developing blood supply and banking in order to meet the demand for blood in their hospitals.
Solution implementation with the stakeholders
The second alternative is more likely to be the most efficiency corpora in the business organization. However, the ability to establish comprehensive blood bank organization will provide a stable blood source as it develops with time for the multiple hospitals in the region. Establishing a firm foundation of the organization will establish a more improved performance for the organization and as a result be able to improve its capacity building to provide enough blood to match the increased demand. Institution will also be able to attain an improved number of local donors due to the ability of the CBCC to integrate its practices with the community (Swayne, 2008). The implementation of the solution should be based on the community needs as the sole purpose is to serve the healthcare needs of the patients from the community. The hospitals and the new CBCC should develop a model aimed at enlightening the society on the need to donate blood and how it benefits the society at large.
Conclusion
The collective responsibility of the hospitals to establish a common blood bank model is very fundamental to developing a healthcare environment that is patient-oriented practices. However, the implementation of this policy is likely to be very beneficial but at the same time critically expensive due to the cost for blood testing, blood collection and storage tools.
