According to Sadock, Sadock & Ruiz (2015) devlopmenal assessment of children and adolescents is important to determine if a developmental delay exists that is impacting the patient. The earlier the developmental delay is found the earlier treatment can begin. Early treatment for developmental delays provides better outcomes with possible resolution of the developmental delay before it imparts major cognitive decline (Why Act Early if You’re Concerned about Development?, 2020).
Two popular assessments for children and adolescents include the Weschler intelligence scale for Children, and the ADHD rating scale (Sadock, Sadock & Ruiz, 2015). The Weschler Intelligence Scale was designed to assess the intelligence of individuals from the age of 6-16 and provides a broad assessment of the childs intellectual function in verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed (Gomez, Vance & Watson, 2016). This assessment is not designed for adults and is therefore not used in adults. The ADHD rating scale is designed in two versions one for children 5-10 and one for adolescents 11-17 years in age (Dupaul, Power, Anastopoulos & Reid, 2016). Each section is designed to be quickly and easily completed in under 5 minutes (Dupaul, Power, Aastopoulos & Reid, 2016). This assessment is not designed to be used nor endorsed for use in adults.
Two treatment options that may be used in children and adolescents with psychological and developmental problems include Infants and toddlers and Child find. These are the names of the programs within the state of Maryland that are tasked with early intervention of developmental, psychological, special education assistance of first infants and toddlers and then later children and adolescents. These programs are not available to adults, and all individuals must be identified either before or during their school ages so that they can receive early intervention and treatment to enhance proper development (Maryland’s Infants and Toddlers Program, 2020). These programs are mandated by the federal government as part of the IDEA act, and all states are obligated to maintain a program of early intervention (Part C of IDEA, 2020).
Parents play an important role in the assessment and treatment of children for many reasons. They set the expectations and attitudes within the family unit and home setting. If the parents are ambivalent to the child’s developmental delay it may go unidentified. The more supportive and involved the parent is the better the potential outcome of the child.
