Trends and issues affecting advanced practice registered nurses today in regards to credentialing and licensure absolutely includes the needs for continuing advancements and improvements in the furnishings license. For about three years now there has been a push there has been a push by more than 20 states to pass legislation in order to expand the scope and practice of an APRN. The concept of full practice authority provides Greater autonomy for a PRN and an increased role and responsibility which is being moved through certain states to be implemented (Peterson, 2017).
Seventeen states have reduced practice authority. Full practice authority is defined as nurse practitioners having the ability to evaluate patients run diagnostic tests and interpretation of those tests diagnose for disease prescribe treatments as well as manage a patient’s treatments including medications (Peterson, 2017).
Barriers to practice exist because although there is overwhelming data that supports full practice authority, many states still will not allow nurses the right to full practice to the extent of their license. The 12 states that do not allow full practice authority include California, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia (Peterson, 2017).
