A research prospectus is an outline of what you plan to do when conducting your research for your paper. A research prospectus serves as a topic proposal for this project. For this stage, follow the steps below to write a short proposal of at least 500 words:



1. Find a central text for your topic area. Ideally this is a longer editorial article, an academic paper, or an essay on the topic at hand. It should be informative, give a clear picture of the issue through background information, and provide clarity to specific terms that you may need to define in your paper.


2. Summarize what you know of the issue, providing at least one quote or block quote from the central text you found for your topic. Make sure you outline what makes the topic controversial. Provide relevant, important details. Where is the issue occurring? When did it begin? Who are the major figures, countries, companies, etc. of the issue? Your central text should be able to help you with this.


3. Propose a working thesis statement for your project. It should include within the wording what sort of stance you’re taking on the issue.


4. Make sure you cite your source(s) used in the research prospectus with proper MLA citations; this included both in-text citation and a work cited page.
