Assignment 1

After completing the chapter reading, students should consider the following questions. Answers should be in paragraph format, citing all sources in MLA format. (Assignment time expectation: 1-2 hours)

What was the canon that was so profoundly important to ancient Egyptian art?

Evaluate the importance of “context” in archeology and art history.

Explain the difference between the early Greek Archaic kouros figure and its Egyptian prototype.

Assignment 2

The Elgin marbles have been in the media over the last few years, as Greece continues to petition the British Museum to return them. The notion of looting during wartime is not uncommon, but what are your thoughts about the current situation of these marble sculptures? Should they be returned? Explain why or why not (250-500 words). Give examples of other similar situations, current or past, along with the solutions met. As you present your case, detail what the Elgin marbles are and what significance they pose in whichever home you’re debating for them. Submit responses to at least two of your peers in support of or against their claims (50 word minimum). Responses should reference similar instances in history in support of your position. Submit all discussion texts using the text submission windows. Please do not depend on word document and pdf files for submissions. This will ensure all students are able to read and respond to student submissions. (Assignment time expectation: 3-4 hours)
