Abstracts are supposed to be short, but full summaries of your full paper, so for this draft, please limit yourself to 6-8 sentences discussing the following:
I. Your thesis–WHAT you’ll argue and WHY it matters (1 sentence)
II. A series of steps you’ll take to prove your claim (3-5 sentences)
III. A call to action stating what you’ll suggest can be done with your findings (1-2 sentences)
Remember, abstracts should only be the essential information of your paper, so only include source information if it is a foundation to the heart of your argument.
If you would like to submit this draft as a formal outline in sentence structure, you may do so, but remember to turn it into a paragraph before you submit the final abstract assignment.
After you have submitted your abstract, please critique two peer abstract drafts. Please consider the following:
– Is it a thesis clear? Is it a question or a statement? How can you make it a statement?
– Is it a working claim (i.e. does it open up an ongoing discussion for the paper)?
– Is it more than a thesis setting up a five-paragraph essay?
– Does it set up a research paper or report? How can it be changed to be a research paper?
– What are the WHAT and WHY? If they are not clear, how can they be clearer?
– Does it give a clear lens the paper will be examining its subject through? What is it?
– How does the summary effectively expand on support for the claim?
– Does or will each section clearly connect back to the thesis?
– How can the outline be more logically organized? How do you plan to transition between points in your paper?
-Are there any potential fallacies (errors in logic)?
-Does the abstract set up a full paper, not just an introduction?
-Is there a call to action of some sort?
-Is there any unneeded information in the abstract (e.g. unnecessary source usage)?
– Anything else relevant.
