Discussion: Applying Health Behavior Theories and Models that Focus on Individuals

In Week 1, you learned that health behavior is influenced by multiple factors, one of which is the intrapersonal level of influence. Within this level are a person’s individual characteristics that influence behavior such as his or her knowledge, attitudes, motivations, beliefs, and personality traits (NCI, 2005). Other personal factors include a person’s skills, past experiences, and developmental history (Hayden, 2019).
At a very basic level, health practitioners must be able to explain and influence the behaviors of individuals (NCI, 2005), which is why individual-level theories are so important to their practice. They allow practitioners to better understand broader-level theories, because all other levels—including groups, organizations, and communities—are composed of individuals.
In this Discussion, you will apply a health behavior theory or model at the intrapersonal level to explain a specific health behavior.

To prepare:
Consider how health behavioral theories and models at the individual level explain behavior—yours or that of another person.
Choose one theory or model and apply it to a personal health behavior–-or a health behavior of a friend or family member–not mentioned in Week 1.
Review the media titled, “Juanita’s Story: Parts 1-5” (Laureate Education, 2018b-f). Consider the various influences on Juanita and how a theory or model might explain some of her behaviors.
By Day 4
Post a comprehensive response for the following:
Describe your selected personal behavior and your chosen intrapersonal theory or model.
Then, explain how this theory or model applies to your selected behavior.
In your explanation, select at least two of the theory’s or model’s constructs that apply and then explain why they are applicable. Be specific and provide examples in your response.
Support your Discussion and peer responses with in-text citations and references from specific Learning Resources.
