Describe how a respiratory therapist would educate a patient
1.List and describe the teach-back technique and its use in educating patients about pulmonary diseases
2.Discuss methods used to promote pulmonary health in communities
Background
wk1_RES231_A.gifHealth education or health literacy is a new concept in health promotion. Patients who misunderstand their health problems and treatment plan are usually non-compliant. Often non-compliant patients are labeled as difficult, but more often their behavior is a result of a misunderstanding. Many adults with low literacy skills struggle to understand health information as simple as discharge instructions, consent forms, and their instructions for home medications. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) now requires that instructions be given on a level understandable to each patient before discharge.
As a home respiratory therapist it is important that we instruct our patients on the proper use of equipment such as meter dose inhalers (MDI), aerosol drug therapy and oxygen therapy. When training patients at home we must deliver information in a matter that is easy to read and understand. In order to be effective with patients whose literacy skills are low, patient education materials should be short and simple, and contain culturally sensitive graphics to encourage desired behavior. Compliance with therapy also may be improved by including family members in the patient education process.
Challenges in patient education
•Patients have difficulties understanding the information that was giving to them
•Patients have short term memory
•Communication
•Patients feel intimidate to express non-understanding
•Patients ashamed to revealed their limited reading ability
Solution to Challenges
•Use plain language
•Focus on the most important messages
•Always check for understanding using teach-back

There are several methods that are use to teach patients in the homecare setting. Because we will be training patients how to use various types of equipment, the teach-back method is the most effective in teaching and patient learning.
Teach-back is a research-based health literacy intervention that promotes adherence, quality and patient safety. We should use teach-back every time it is indicated to- support patients and families, confirm understanding, and promote consistent use of key practices.
Key Elements of using Teach-back Effectively
•Use a language that the family and patient can understand
•Use a caring voice and have a good attitude
•Use appropriate eye contact and body language
•Have the patient to explain in their own words what they heard you say
•Use open ended questions that will not embarrass the patient
•Avoid question that can be answered yes or no
•Use reader-friendly print materials to support learning
•Have patient repeat if the session was unsuccessful
Promoting Pulmonary Health
Patient education has become an increasingly popular area in the health care sector. Using a variety of different methods to educate populations and avoid illnesses, respiratory therapists can help to improve the overall wellness of Americans. Preventative health care informs populations and promotes healthy treatment for illnesses.
Respiratory Therapists (RTs) are needed to encourage individuals to receive preventative services such as screenings, counseling, and precautionary medication. Through public health education, RTs can inspire a larger group of people to engage in health lifestyles and ultimately live longer lives.
As respiratory therapists, we should encourage:
•Regular exercise-promoting regular activity (preferably 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week) to combat: heart conditions, high blood pressure and other diseases such as stroke, diabetes, and arthritis.
•Weight management-exercise also encourages weight management. Preventative care includes- maintaining and controlling weight with exercise and healthy eating habits-to prevent diseases such as: obesity, cardiovascular disease, and osteoarthritis.
•Avoidance of smoking and drug abuse: aside from the addiction threat associated with smoking and drug use, there is the risk of lung cancer, emphysema and other forms of cancer.
•Moderated alcohol use: education about the effects of alcohol consumption, as well as early screening for diseases such as liver disease, stroke or high blood pressure, can significantly increase the chances of illness prevention.
•Control of existing diseases: work to identify existing conditions in the early stages. Modifying an individual’s behaviors can control or minimize the effects of a particular ailment.
