Could you expand on a topic if a reader immediately questioned it or pointed out a fallacy in your logic?
Discussion 7 – Brainstorming Expansion
No unread replies.33 replies.
For this assignment, try a few brainstorming methods to help prepare for expanding ideas from your midterm more fully. Then write and post a page responding to your exercise. You do not need to reply to anyone else, but I am making this an open discussion to help provide examples of how other students are expanding their essays.
This assignment is intended to help you think of potential points of expansion before you start completing the final version of your paper.
Some Brainstorming Exercises:
-Listing
-Cornell Method
-Metacommentary
-Outlining and Structuring
-Questions: Evidence, source, or credibility?
-Expand on Counterargument
-Listing
Make lists of ideas that could use more information or that you could expand upon.
-Cornell Method
Make two or three columns to document your ideas while rereading your midterm. Commenting on these thoughts and asking questions can help you find areas to expand.
Quotes, points, ideas, or whatever that caught your attention for any reason
Take time to ask yourself what caught your attention and why it might have caught your attention
Expand on the ideas you come across thinking about why this point caught your attention
Summary and Analysis of the work:
-Metacommentary
Make comments and ask yourself questions about those comments. Comment on those questions to dig deeper and help find specifics you might need to expand upon in your final.
-Fixing Assumptions
As I review your midterms, I will help point some of these out, but in the meantime, ask your self how you know each statement you make is true. If you have not clearly illustrated why your statements are true and trustworthy, you may need to expand on those ideas.
-Questions: Evidence, source, or credibility?
Along with asking whether your statements are true or assumed, double-check your sources and evidence to ensure they are trustworthy and believable. You may find that not only do you need a better source, but you need more information to back your statements and sources up.
-Outlining and Structuring
If you don’t already have an outline, make one with a main idea from each paragraph. Doing so can help you see the larger picture and progression of ideas. You might also find sections that seem incomplete once summarized into an outline.
-Expand on Counterargument
Have you looked at all perspectives of your argument? Could you expand on a topic if a reader immediately questioned it or pointed out a fallacy in your logic? This expansion is specifically important if you have a straw-man fallacy, which means there is no logical counterargument. In that case, you will need to expand your paper to make it arguable.
