Project Topic:
Delivery of Healthcare in Prisons
You are the Associate Commissioner for Health Services in a Correctional agency. The Commissioner has a budget hearing before the Legislative Ways and Means Committee. He has been advised that the committee will allow him to present a PowerPoint presentation to support his request for additional funding in the Health Services budget. The Commissioner has assigned you to prepare and present the PowerPoint presentation. His direction to you is to identify the major legal and ethical reasons why correctional healthcare costs are rising; to identify two specific categories of inmates that have had a significant impact upon the rising cost of healthcare, and the reasons why they are increasing the cost of healthcare; and finally, he has directed you to provide examples of what improvements to the delivery of healthcare (best practices) can be achieved with increased funding in the Health Services Budget.
The presentation must include:
A discussion of the legal mandate for the delivery of healthcare in prisons
An identification of specific groups of inmates who may have unique medical issues and needs.
An identification of systematic problems that may exist which negatively impact the delivery of healthcare services e.g. space, staffing, etc.
Examples of how healthcare services will be improved, for the two identified groups, if the Health Services budget is increased.
