What are the various ways you identify yourself? What labels do you have for yourself? Here are some examples to get you started—man, woman; nice person, angry person, quiet person, inclusive person; activist, pacifist, conservative, environmentalist; American, immigrant; white, black, Asian, Hispanic, human being, world citizen; Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jew, spiritual, agnostic; Democrat, Republican, independent; mother, father; boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife; student, carpenter, lawyer, musician, writer.
What would change if you dropped those labels? Who would you be?
What are some ways you label other people? (Be sure to think about specific people; you may have more than one label for each person.)
Are those labels about deep aspects of the person or superficial aspects?
How would your relationship or thought about that person change if you did not have those labels? How might your interactions change?
How do your answers apply to the concept of being ethnocentric?
