CSCI109 Module 1 Application Online File Storage Assignment
The Online File Storage assignment has two stages. First, if
you have not already done so, set up your file storage space in Canvas
following the directions below. Second, you will write a reflective short paper
comparing other popular online storage alternatives and submit it for grading.
1) Create Your Online File Storage Space
Canvas provides a file (Links to an external site.) storage
area for students. In this file storage area, student can rename, organize,
upload and delete files. The University determines the amount of storage space.
It is a good place to store your course documents. Use this space for files you
are working on currently or files that you want to keep for future reference.
How does file storage work? (Read and follow the instructions
before you complete the file storage and reflection activity.)
Create a folder in your personal “Files” area and
label it CSCI-109. Store the syllabus or some other course document in the
folder. Notice that you use “Add Folder” to create subfolders.
Add an image to your Canvas profile. See Settings (top right) > click the
avatar icon to load image.
2) Review and Compare Popular Online Storage Alternatives
Review and briefly explore the introductory information
(video or ‘about’ web page) for one of the online storage systems. Examples:
Dropbox (Links to an external site.), Mozy (Links to an external site.), OneDrive
(Links to an external site.) (which is provided by ERAU with Microsoft 2013).
When you have completed this application, post a brief essay
consisting of 2-3 paragraphs (about 250 words) outlining how you may use online
storage in the future. Explain how you think Canvas’ storage space will be
useful (or not) and justify your position by using examples.
If you refer to ideas on a web site or other source be sure
to use an in-text citation and list the source in APA format.

CSCI109 Module 2 Application Productivity Software Assignment
For this written activity, explore two of the free software
applications below that you have not used before and envision how they would
work for you in your school, work, home, and/or social digital environment. If you choose Snag-It or OneNote, create
something using the tool.
1) Software Applications
Snag-It.jpg Snag-It (Links to an external site.) – Great
tool for capturing all or part of a computer screen, graphic, or print. Use it
for PowerPoint presentations and other projects that need enhancement. It has
the 30-day free trial and is reasonably priced.
NaturalReader.jpg NaturalReader (Links to an external site.)
– This is a “text to speech” software application. It can be used to read many
different written text formats such as web pages, PDFs, Microsoft Word, eBooks,
etc.
one_note.jpg OneNote (Links to an external site.) – This is
a go-to notebook. According to the Microsoft Webstie, “you can use OneNote
at home, at school, and at work for recipe collections, class notes, projects
and more. You can take notes anywhere on the page. Add text, to-dos, pictures,
files, and audio recordings.“
2) Consider the following
For the write up, submit a brief paragraph detailing your
experience and include screen captures of what you created in the Word
document, or for NaturalReader have the app open showing what you are reading
(e.g. course text).
To screen capture, use Snag-It, or other built-in capture
software. For Windows: PrtScn button
(Links to an external site.). For Mac:
Cmd+Shift+3 (Links to an external site.).
To place screen captures into Word use the copy and paste
command for the application you are using.
Your application response is a reflective written assignment
relating to the module readings, discussion, and other activities presented. If
you refer to ideas on a website or other source (like your textbook) be sure to
use an in-text citation and list the source in APA format.

Delete the body of text from the template file. Begin
entering information such as the title, your name, etc.
Enter your thesis statement at the top of the first page in
sentence format.
Follow the outline format, entering the introduction, body,
and conclusion. The final paper must be about 1.5 pages long.
The outline must include at least two in-text citations and
two sources, both in APA style.
m3_DCDU.jpgComputer Input-Output Technologies that Link
Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and
Eurocontrol (Europe’s FAA) actively research, experiment with, and deploy
technologies in order to create a safer and more efficient airspace system.
An example is Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications
(CPDLC), which in addition to the existing radio, creates a second channel for
communication between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATC). Instead of
keying the radio, ATC and pilots type instructions and requests and send via
text messaging. This reduces ATC workload and frees up the radio channels for
important communications.

The purpose
of this activity is to determine whether your computer software is up-to-date.
Access theComputer Hope (Links to an external site.) Website and read the note
about operating systems. Then do an operating system check by selecting the
bullet that says, “Online system information tool to display your operating
system information.“
Share your
experience and what you have learned. Examples of information you might
discover...
Is your
system information what you expected? Are all of your “Plug-ins” updated? E.g.,
Flash, Java, etc.
Is there
anything unusual under the “Additional Plugin” information (some
computers will not have any)?
Is there
software loaded on your computer that you are unsure about what it does?
Your
application response is a reflective written assignment relating to the module
readings, discussion, and other activities presented. Responses need to be in
essay format with an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion. It should
address the questions in 2-3 paragraphs (about 250 words), unless otherwise
specified. If you refer to ideas on a website or other source (like your textbook)

CSCI109 Module 4 Spreadsheet/Workbook Assignment
For this
assignment, you will create several spreadsheets in an Excel workbook and
demonstrate different functions. Read all the instructions in this module item
before you begin. If you are unfamiliar with Excel functions, thoroughly read
the Excel Activity Walk Through document provided. If you are familiar with
functions used in Excel, you will still want to review the document to see what
is expected.
Excel
Activity Workbook Requirements
Excel
Formulas and FunctionsPreview the documentView in a new window (Excel Activity
Walk Through document).
For
spreadsheet options, go to the Productivity Software module introduced earlier
in the course.
Label all
values and name the worksheet tabs.
Apply
formatting such as bold text, colors, etc. as appropriate.
Save your
workbook in .xslx format.
To prepare
for this assignment, view Microsoft’s introductory videos #1, 2, 3, and 10 on
functions in the Excel 2013 Course: Excel Functions (Links to an external
site.). (Viewing other titles on the webpage is optional).
Spreadsheet
Functions Part 1:
Create a new
spreadsheet that contains three separate data sets. Place each data set onto
its own worksheet. See the list of example data sets:
Temperature
of your city for the past 5-10 days
Scored
points per game of your favorite sports team for their past 5-10 games
Amount you
paid for gas for the past few months
Miles flown/
driven per day/trip etc. for the past month
Most
anything else you can tabulate or can track
Use at least
four different functions (e.g. SUM, MAX, AVERAGE, MIN, COUNT, etc.) to
summarize each data set. You choose which to use. So each tab must have four
different functions.
Spreadsheet
Functions Part 2:
On another
sheet of the same file, create a worksheet that contains data and a calculation
determining monthly payments for a proposed purchase.
Identify
your dream vehicle (plane, automobile, boat, etc.) and estimate its cost and
the interest rate if you financed its purchase.
Enter data
(loan amount, interest rate, term, etc.) onto spreadsheet and use the PMT
function and cell references to determine the monthly payments.

CSCI109 Module 5 Application: Network Plan Assignment
You were
selected to design a small peer-to-peer network for a new facility which has
three offices, two conference rooms, a networked printer and a receptionist
computer. Each desk space must have a wired network connection for a computer
as well as wireless access for mobile devices. Using a software tool of your
choice, create a basic diagram that depicts a star network topology. The focus
here is on the network communications equipment so include only that equipment
and end nodes on the network.
When you
submit your plan, include a brief (1-2 paragraphs) description of your design
in the assignment comments. State any assumptions you’ve made about the kind of
work being done, the demands the people in the office will put on the network
or how they’ll use it, and how that influenced your design. For example, if
this is a small streaming video-based news service, they probably need more
performance from the network and their ISP than a small rental property
management office might. Why?
Requirements:
Specify
internet connection via service provider
Include
hardware devices that:
connect your
LAN to the ISP
connect your
network to other networks
enable end
nodes to connect to the network
Include type
of cable media (be specific)
Label all
items (brand and model names are acceptable but not required).
Depict
topology in the diagram.
All work
must be original and not taken from Internet sources.
Save your
diagram as an image (.jpg or .jpeg) and insert this image into your Word document
with the network description.
Optional:
Detail a
security solution. Is this a hardware firewall, software, or both?
