Week 1: Importance of Theory in Nursing

For many students enrolled in NR501, this is an initial course for nursing theory.  So, let’s have a debate!!!  Is nursing theory important to the nursing profession?  If you believe that it is important, explain why it is useful.  If you do not believe that it is useful, explain why nursing theory is not necessary to the profession?  Be sure to provide an example that demonstrates your opinion and a scholarly reference (not using the required textbook or lesson) which supports your opinion.

When asked why we choose to nurse as a profession most of us respond we enjoy caring for others in their time of need. This is one of the basic definitions of the word caring. Nurses instinctually seem to notice the suffering of others and look for ways to ease that suffering. Most of the nursing process that nurses practice involves detecting human suffering, implementing interventions to combat that suffering, evaluating those interventions and making changes if those interventions are not successful. Watson believed that caring was more than just something nurses did or believed in, she developed a theory that has been referred to as the “core of nursing” because its carative factors serve as a guide to promote therapeutic healing and relationship building between nurse and patient. Another theorist with an interesting idea of caring is Kolcaba and the Comfort Theory and Practice. This theory integrates nursing research, theory, and practice into an interpersonal relationship between healthcare provider and patient care with the common nursing goal of care. Ponte & Fatima da Silva (2014) explain that there is a relationship between Kocaba’s comfort theory and the Care- Research method which the caregiver researcher and the cared-researched patient working together can create alternative actions to minimize discomfort and improve the level of comfort.Week 1: Importance of Theory in Nursing
