Seminar descriptionEducation is strongly related to benefits on the labour market and in other life domains.However, returns to education differ markedly between national contexts as well as withinsocieties (e.g., by gender or social origin). The seminar addresses questions such as: Why iseducation rewarded on the labour market? Which institutional set ups are associates withhigher/lower returns to education? Are returns to education, for instance lower for womenand individuals from lower social classes? To that end, we will discuss different sociologicaland economic theories on the link between education and labour market placement as wellas empirical studies covering both between- and within-country variation in returns toeducation in European and North-American countries. While the focus of the seminar lies onreturns to education on the labour market, we will also touch on further return dimensions(such as health or civic engagement).
