Responds to two peers1. Hillary Faus Evolution of minority rightsWhen talking about minorities, it is important to understand its history and ultimately the impact societies treatment of minorities has on society. For many generations’ minority groups in all European countries have been oppressed in some form and assimilated to majority views. Although the earliest decision makers such as Woodrow Wilson, proposed many documents to protect and promote the individual minorities, few had followed through, and define it in such a way it becomes vague and meaningless. This has been the case for many minority groups in America, although I feel driven to learn them all, women as a minority relates to me the most. My view of a minority is a group of individuals who are oppressed, restricted, and unjustly scrutinized by society. Wippman quoted the League of Nations in his essay saying, “the view that the promotion and protection of the rights of minorities will contribute to the social and political stability of states in which they live” (Wippman,12). When women’s rights were stripped instead of promoted in recent years, women banded together and protested for the freedom of choice, when women feel treated as equals there is no protesting. In her book on women’s rights, Dorothy McBride mentions, “fundamental frameworks last a long time because they are familiar and comfortable (McBride,Parry,7). I agree with Wippman quoting, “the only way to combine harmony with democratic rule is to guarantee minorities a share of political power (Wippman,13). When we open political seat up to women, and people of color we are expanding our societal views and enriching our cultural experiences.2. Fnu Samuel Ngum In whippman’s essay, the evolution and implementation of minority rights on page 604, he talked about a series of approaches various organizations have taken to protect the rights of minorities and also the ones that were well established such as the non-discrimination against minorities principle which was also broadly accepted. The contemporary approach to which minorities rights could be protected caught my attention. International leaders wanted to prevent another violent situation like that of the former Yugoslavia so they had to seat and reconsider these norms that had been in practice for a long while regarding minorities. they started by rejecting assimilation as a legitimate state policy. where a majority would easily force a minority group to join them culturally and politically which I think was not fair. As humans, we should not that much of a right over the life of the other. nobody or group of people should be forced into certain beliefs but as we all know that is not how the earth and nature works. That is why it is important for laws such as this to go in order to protect the rights of minorities. To conclude, I was born and raised in Cameroon in West Africa and moved to the united states when I was 17. of course while growing up in school they taught us a lot about the slave trade and colonization. we still have old European colonization buildings and other symbols of their presence in Africa. I got to learn all about these except for the history of our brothers and sisters they brought to Europe and to the Americas. I only know what the media has portrayed the African Americans to be so I will like to learn more about the African American minority group in America. I believe there is more to what I know.
