1.Please find an article (published in the last 2-3 years) relating to human subject research and financial pressures on higher education institutions.Provide article an analysis/summary.2. Provide a detail summary of another person’s analysis and article below. Article: https://www.propublica.org/article/university-of-illinois-chicago-mani-pavuluri-3-million-research-breakdown I found an article by Jodi S. Cohen, The $3 Million Research Breakdown, that documented the multiple failures of the University of Illinois at Chicago to appropriately oversee the research of Mani Pavuluri. Pavuluri was a child psychiatrist who committed research misconduct by conducting clinical trials using lithium to manage mental illness in children. The article outlines the multiple failures in oversight by the University of Illinois at Chicago of Pavuluri’s research as well as Pavuluri’s research misconduct. The University of Illinois at Chicago ended up having to repay the National Institute of Mental Healththe entire amount of Pavuluri’s research grant, which totalled $3.1 million. The article notes that it’s rare for the NIMH to ask an institution to return research funds. 3. The letter details the reasoning behind MSCHE’s decision to not renew Southeastern’s accreditation and also provides the steps MSCHE has taken to work with Southeastern. MSCHE demonstrated a lack of compliance beginning in 2005 which was never adequately addressed by Southeastern. Southeastern’s continued noncompliance ultimately resulted in adverse accreditation action from MSCHE in 2009. The letter also provided detailed information about how the institution could file an appeal. Southeastern was, according to MSCHE, providing subpar academics to their enrolled students. This does seem to be the case. Gonzalez (2012) points out that one fifth of Southeastern graduates failed the CPA exam, which is taken post-graduation. Because of this significant failure rate and other qualms with Southeastern, a group of students sued the college claiming that Southeastern did not make good on their promise to their students (Gonzalez, 2012). Provide feedback to the following summary below: I would likely advise the institution I was working with to voluntarily relinquish accreditation temporarily (emphasis mine), if the institution was in a position similar to Drake University. Drake University was primarily focused on teaching/educating, which is typical of institutions that are not considered research institutions, which Drake is not (Drake University, 2019). The accreditation that was temporarily relinquished was accreditation for a specific program, not for the university as a whole (Hicks, 2014). This is crucial because regional accreditation for the university as a whole has much larger implications for the university like the capability of awarding Title IV funding. Relinquishing accreditation for one program or subset of the school would not affect the capability of the school to continue to award Federal financial aid. It is also worth noting that Drake has since regained accreditation for its business program, and has accumulated program-specific accreditation for education, music, art, chemistry and pharmacy as well (Drake, 2020) and has bounced back from relinquishing the AACSB accreditation previously. As long as the institution I was advising could maintain regional accreditation and was reasonably expected to regain accreditation after making improvements in one area, I would be comfortable advising a voluntary relinquishment of accreditation.
